The Houston Bronze Ensemble has offered scholarships to this event since 2017. This year, we offered four $100.00 scholarships to help with the cost of the event for attendees. These monies were issued as a reimbursement following the event. We asked that the recipients send us pictures and write a few sentences about the event. We shared these on Facebook and on our website. Below are a few words from our scholarship recipients for 2025.
Jacqueline Koo: I had a really great time at the College Ring In. I met a lot of wonderful fellow handbellers, and it was truly a privilege to be directed by Kathryn Jurado and be part of such a great production. The music was both new to me and a challenge, and I am so grateful I could experience this journey with this group.
Caroline Espe: College Ring-In 2025 was a weekend full of companionship, learning, and wonderful music. The opportunity to be in a room with a group of people who are dedicated to the music we are performing is always a fulfilling experience for me, and to have Kathryn Jurado directing us absolutely completed the weekend. My favorite part of being involved in handbells has always been the teamwork involved in every rehearsal and performance - the amount of trust you need to have in each other in order to put on the best performance possible. The musicianship and friendship at CRI were invaluable to me and I am so grateful for the experience!
Farrell Brown: The College Ring-In was an amazing opportunity to challenge myself in a safe, fun environment filled with other passionate ringers. I have never been to an event where I haven't been able to practice the music with a group in advance. Kathryn Jurado was an amazing teacher who took her time to show us what we were capable of and help us create a really wonderful concert that I was proud to participate in. It was so fun to dance along to latin-inspired music and be exposed to cultures not often represented in the handbell world. I made so many fantastic connections and would absolutely participate again in the future.
Rachel Wehrle: I had an amazing time at the College Ring-in event in Lakeland Florida. The pieces that we played had so many fun and complex parts to them. I loved playing the battery/bass part because of the repetitive but challenging rhythms. Outside of ringing, I spent quality time with the ringers while at the group dinners. I made so many new friends that I hope to see again next year.
We wish each of them the very best in everything that they do. It was definitely our honor to grant them the scholarships.
